The Fontana di Trevi in Rome is one of the most spectacular and best-known European monuments. Since 19 B.C. the aqueducts of the Aqua Virgo, built under Emperor Augustus by his son-in-law Marcus V. Agrippa, brought without interruption water into the Roman city centre. While in ancient times the aqueduct ended near the Pantheon, its termination was since the Middle Ages the piazza di Trevi. The Popes as "successors" of the Roman Emperors rebuilt the spring of the Aqua Virgo several times until Pope Clement XII. commissioned the splendid fountain that we see today, built in 1733-1744 by the Roman architect Nicola Salvi. It became instantly one of the most famous landmarks of European architecture.
Plans and projects for and drawings after the Fontana di Trevi can be found in many public and private collections in Europe and North America.
